The wonderful world of henna
Dye plants are natural hair colourants made from powdered leaves, roots and bark containing colouring pigments. As well as colouring the hair and covering grey, they leave it soft and shiny, making each strand thicker. Unlike chemical dyes, they do not penetrate the hair but coat it, forming a protective layer that strengthens it and helps prevent split ends.
The queen of dye plants is Lawsonia, commonly known as henna.

The plant powder commonly known as henna comes in several varieties. Traditional light red henna is made from Lawsonia inermis, a plant whose dyeing properties have been known since ancient times. Its leaves produce a green powder with a strong, clay-like smell. This coats the hair in a fine protective film, colouring the hair shaft and shielding it from pollution, while leaving it stronger and more resilient. The name “henna” comes from Arabic, while Lawsonia, the name of the plant, comes from the English doctor who identified it in 1709: John Lawson.
